Free Weight Loss Plans

January 14th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

The march to health and fitness is raging and a lot of people are getting in on it. Some people do it in order to have a sexy body, some people do it because they are embarrassed about their body as it is now, while others do it just to remain fit and healthy. Because of this, there are hundreds of fitness programs on the Internet, in gyms, spas and fitness centres all over the world. Some are too expensive - so expensive that you will lose weight quickly, just because you have to work hard to earn the money to pay for these fitness programs.

You might not need to go to the gym or the spa or any fitness centre and spend a fortune just to slim down and obtain that longed for sexy body. There are many books available in the bookstores] offering weight loss programs which seem convenient and cheap. However, the books are not cheap though. These weight loss programs are gaining immense popularity due to their publicity, testimonials and reviews and you may be confused as to exactly which one to follow. So before you pick which weight loss plan to follow, try reading the following precis of the most popular diet programs around today.

The Atkins’ New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins: This diet plan encourages a high protein diet with less carbohydrates. You can dine heartily on vegetables and meat, but must not eat bread, rice or pasta. You are not restricted on your fat intake so it is OK to pour on the (correct) salad dressing and freely spread on the butter. However, during the diet, some people may find themselves lacking fibre and high on fat and cholesterol. Grains and fruits are also severely limited.

The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet by Drs. Heller. This diet plan also advocates a low carbohydrate diet. It recommends eating meat, vegetables and fruit, dairy and grain products. however, warns against taking in too many carbohydrates. So-called “Reward Meals” can be rather high in fats and saturated fats.

Choose to Lose: by Dr. Goor. Restricts fat intake. You are given a “fat” budget and you are given free reign on how to spend it. It does not pressure the individual to watch his carbohydrate consumption. Eating meat and poultry as well as low-fat dairy and seafood is OK. You may also consume vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and pasta. This weight loss plan is quite healthy, because it recommends healthy amounts of fruits and vegetables and saturated fats. Watch your triglyceride levels though. If they are high, cut down on the carbohydrates and eat more unsaturated fats.

The DASH Diet. Advocates eating a moderate amount of fat and protein but lots of carbohydrates. It was primarily designed to reduce blood pressure. The diet plan follows the pyramid food guide and encourages a high consumption of whole wheat grains as well as fruit and vegetables and low-fat dairy. Some dieters think it advocates too much eating to produce significant weight loss.

Eat More, Weigh Less: by Dr. Ornish. Mostly vegetarian fare and strictly low-fat. Warns to look out for low-fat dairy and egg whites. This diet plan is low in calcium and limits the consumption of healthy foods like seafood and lean poultry.

Eat Right for Your Type: This scheme is really unusual because it bases its recommendations on your blood type. For instance, it advises lots of meat for people with the blood type O. However, diet plans for some blood types are nutritionally imbalanced and too low in calories. Furthermore, just for the record, there is no evidence that blood type can affect dietary needs.

The Pritkin Principle: It is focused on trimming the number of calories by eating watery foods that make you feel full. Eating vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, pasta, soups, salads and low-fat dairy is OK, although it restricts protein sources to lean meat, seafood and poultry. It is healthy because it provides low amounts of saturated fats and large amounts of vegetables and fruits. However, it is low on calcium and limits lean protein sources.

Volumetrics: It recommends consuming fewer calories. It advises about the same foodstuffs as Pritkin but restricts fatty food and grain foodstuffs like popcorn, pretzels and crackers. This diet is reasonably healthy given the high amounts of fruit and vegetables. It also recommends eating fewer calories and saturated fats.

The Zone: It is fairly low on carbohydrates yet moderately high on proteins. It encourages low-fat protein foods such as fish and chicken and vegetables, fruits and grains. It is also a healthy diet but lacking in grains and calcium.

Weight Watchers: They advise high carbohydrate meals, but are moderate on fats and proteins. A very healthy diet program and very flexible too. It permits the dieter to devise his own meals rather than offering recipes, although there are Weight Watchers’ TV dinners in the supermarkets.

Food - Preparing And Storing It - A few Handy Tips

January 14th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

In these days of superior alertness of the shortages in the world and the recent economic problems in the whole world, but especially in the rich Western countries, which are the powerhouses of most Third World countries’ progress, people are more conscious of waste. It is a sin again to waste food, like it was 50 years ago.

This can only be a good thing although it is a shame that it took an international financial crisis to make us remember the lesson. These days, waste of any kind is greeted with public disapproval and so it is at home too. Most people spend a very high percentage of their outgoings on food and so anyone who wants to cut back, has to first look to this quarter to make a saving.

However, saving does not necessarily mean ‘not buying’, it can and should mean ‘not throwing away’. In other words, prepare your food and do not let your food go off. Preparation and storage are the key words. With that thought in mind, here are a few of my tips for preparing and storing food correctly.

Bread - tons of bread is thrown away every day, because it has gone stale or mouldy and yet it is totally unnecessary. Keep your bread in the deep freezer and not in the bread bin. A whole loaf will slice frozen with the proper knife and sliced bread will come away slice by slice. There is no requirement to defrost as it only takes a minute or two at room temperature.

Bananas - most people understand that banana skins go black if stored in the fridge, but most people do not know that bananas can be frozen solid. Yes, the skins will still turn black, but the fruit will be unharmed.

Cake - to stop cake from going stale, store it in a tin with an apple. The moisture in the apple will stop the cake from going hard.

Watercress - to keep watercress from wilting, store it upside down in water, that is stalks up.

Salt - salt often gets damp, especially if stored in a steamy kitchen without sufficient ventilation, but you do not have to worry about that if you put two or three grains of rice in the salt cellar. They will soak up the moisture before the salt.

Cereal - stop cereal from going soft by resealing the bag with a few clothes pegs. Your cereal will last weeks more.

Jam - boiling jam produces a scum which has to be skimmed off and thrown away. This wastes jam, goodness and flavour. However, if you whisk a knob of butter into the mixture at the last moment the scum will not appear, saving time and goodness.

Funnel - you always seem to need a funnel when you do not have one. Then you vow to get a funnel for the next time. Do not bother. Just cut the top nine inches off a plastic bottle of cola. It makes an ideal throw-away funnel. Some of the larger bottles even have a handle on them which is even better.

Reviews About Scooters

January 6th, 2010 Colin Jones No comments

I have read loads of reviews about scooters and motorbikes, because I am a subscriber to a scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts’ magazine that carries articles about all the different types of scooters and motorcycles on the market. It also recommends the best one to acquire depending on whether you are a first time owner or a two-wheeler old hand. The magazine is great, and it helps me understand what other scooter owners feel about the various models and brands of scooters.

I have to say that people’s views vary quite widely on every subject, which is why it’s perhaps always better to do your own research and get what best suits you, rather than getting what other people say will suit you, when they do not even know you. Having said that, many first time buyers do not actually know what they are looking for, and it is really these people that these reports are written for.

However, these reviews are not meant to be taken too literally, rather they are intended as a guideline so that potential greenhorn buyers have to ruminate about the aspects of buying a scooter or motorbike. It also gives experts a run down of the salient facts. Then you need to make up your own mind whether you care, for example, whether the scooter’s seat is made of leather or fabric.

All in all, I like this magazine because it considers people from all walks of life, and its writers and editor appreciate that even if you are interested in purchasing a scooter, you may not have enough money or you might be reading just out of interest in scooters or motorcycles.

We all know that money is difficult to come by these days, and purchasers are becoming more and more well-informed about the goods they want, which is a good thing in my eyes. After all, there are other merchants who only want to get the most money they can for their products and mark up their scooter prices to excessive amounts in the hope that they will get a couple of foolish patrons that did not do their groundwork.

And I am sure that they probably do get a few patrons like that, because they do stay in business somehow and I regularly hear awfulness stories about individuals who have paid far too much for their scooter or motorbike.

When you ask them why they did not take the time to read the reviews in a magazine, they usually say that they did not know about the magazines, or even worse, that they did not have sufficient time. Therefore it appears that they had sufficient time to work like a dog for the money, but then not sufficient time to read a short magazine review? I doubt it very much. With a bit of luck, consumers will continue becoming more and more careful about their purchases.

It is such a pity, so, If you happen to be a new scooter fan, or you know someone who is, please make sure you read the scooter and motorbike reviews before concluding a purchase. It can literally save you hundreds or even thousands of your hard earned dollars.

Mandarin New Year Dragon Symbol

January 5th, 2010 John Chan No comments

Find out about the most honorable Chinese symbol and its connection to the important events of the Chinese New Year.

The two most vital elements of the Chinese culture are the images of the Chinese dragon and the auspicious event of the Chinese New Year. They have been an integral part of the Chinese culture for thousands of years now and continue even to the present day. Besides, these two things have an uncanny link between them.

The dragon is an integral part of Chinese culture. The westerners only happened to know about it through their explorations into martial art movies and Chinese art work. Whereas, for the Chinese, this dragon image stands for a immensely revered mythical beast that is prized for its beauty, uniqueness and spiritual abilities.

With due respect to the Chinese custom, firstly we must recognize the fact that the Chinese New Year does not coincide with the Western celebrations of the New Year. The reason behind this is that the western world follows the Gregorian solar calendar and the Chinese have always followed the lunar calendar. Thereby, the cycle of the moon decides the date on which Chinese New Year event is celebrated and this is absolutely on a different day from the Western New Year.

New Year is a special time in China. It is a time when the festive spirit is soaring and there are all kinds of celebrations going on. As has been the ancient tradition of the country they have animal signs associated with the change of time. There are twelve animals that are repeated after every twelve years. So the year of the dragon returns with all its might and power after every twelve years.

The dragon sign is considered to be a symbolism of great power. Moreover, the image of a dragon is always considered as a symbol of mystical power and anger. The anger of a dragon is always mysteriously justified and hence it signifies the correction of any mistake. So in this case, the angry dragon image is not evil but it plays a role of inspiration.

They say the streets have rights upon you. If you hang around on the streets and see some evil you then it is upon you to block it with your hands if you have the might. If you don’t then at least make an attempt to stop it with your tongue. And if you cannot even do that then at least in your heart know that the act is evil and this is a very low level of trust.

What the image of a dragon does is to eradicate the wrong doers. It does not represent wrong doings but works in counter-action. The best option is to avoid doing evil and engaging in doing right things. Hence the Chinese New Year symbol of the dragon is nothing but a revolution to bring about peace in a festive and spiritual way.
