The Difference Between Oriental And Western Zodiac Symbols

December 7th, 2009 John Chan No comments

The Chinese calendar has a completely different system of dating as compared to the west. They follow a lunar calendar which shows a cycle of 12 years unlike the west where we use a linear calendar to show the time concept. As far as Zodiac calendar is concerned the Chinese use animal images to stand for each Zodiac sign.

The western calendar is guided by the sun and is called solar calendar whereas Chinese calendar being based on cycles of moon is called lunar calendar. When the New Year is calculated the Chinese calendar is fairly different from that of the west where they have New Year starting around the end of January and beginning of February.

The modern day China still stick to the lunar calendar for its traditional events and festivities though formally it had adopted the western calendar by 1911. To give an example the Chinese New Year is still celebrated as per the lunar calendar. The calendars which are printed in China today show both lunar and solar dates.

According to popular folk lore in China each year of the cyclic lunar calendar should be represented by a particular animal. For the entire year that animal will be the official sign marked for that year. There are twelve animals for twelve years with their unique personalities. As the lunar years are cyclical the same animal is repeated every twelve years.

The animals that represented the years took on the connotation that is similar to the concept of monthly or daily horoscopes in the west. The only distinction was that the Chinese zodiac symbols determined were for the entire year. Hence people born in the year of a particular animal were believed to have the characteristics associated with that animal.

You may take the personality traits which the Chinese zodiac symbols describe seriously or not seriously but they do have another part to play.

Chinese lunar calendar is very useful in calculating the age of a person. Once you know the category of the animal to which the person belongs with a bit of intelligence and little mathematics this can be done.

The cunning rat rode upon the ox’s back and just as the ox was about to reach to the finish line the rat jumped off his back and took the lead. The last to arrive at the finish line was the pig. Thus we find the rat to be the first with the tricked ox second and the pig coming in last.

As the legend goes the Ox was in the lead in the race to the opposite bank with a rat on its back. When it was about to reach the finishing line the rat being clever jumped off its back and became first to finish. Therefore the months too begin with rat in the lead with ox taking the second position and pig in the last.

Chinese zodiac symbols are not the same as those utilized in western astrology. To read further on Chinese symbols please click on the links.
