From La Savina to Es Pujols

January 15th, 2010 Alameda Abadilla No comments

Port de la Savina takes its name from the fact that this natural harbor used to be a busy port that exported sabina pine. It was also used to export salt. These days the port is pretty much dedicated to shipping tourists in and out, but it’s name recalls its heritage.

The ferries that call at La Savina are from mainland Spain and other Balearic islands. Ferries come many ports, including: Altea, Alicante, Denia, Sant Antoni, Santa Eularia, Palma, and Barcelona. There are also boats that go from La Savina to the neighboring island of Espalmador.

Exploring the restaurants and tapas bars of La Savina can be a most enjoyable pleasure, and it is a great way to spend your time. In between the Spanish sausages and paella you can also visit the many rental stores to get a bike or car, ready to explore the rest of the island. There is a tourist information office on the marina, so you should definitely pop in there too. The staff are very friendly.

After a while in Port de la Savina you can go on to explore the lagoon of Estany des Peix. It is connected to the sea via a very narrow mouth so only the smallest boats anchor here. Just across from Estany des Peix is the other saltwater lagoon of Estany Pudent, and beyond that are the salt pans. Sometimes the lagoons can get a bit smelly in which case the beaches of Es Trucadors offer an alternative.

The first destination for many people who arrive at La Savina is Es Pujols. This resort village has a great beach and warm shallow waters which are ideal for water sports. There is disabled access to the ocean and it is a very family friendly area. Whilst there are a lot of you tourists here it is not like the wild party atmosphere that you get in Ibiza.

In the evenings Es Pujols turns into a lively network of market stalls along the promenade of Avenida Miramar and into the high street of Passeig des Plameres. The locals, some of whom are aging hippies, sell a lot of hand made goods.

Thailand: My First Night in Pattaya

January 6th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

It was seven-ish and I was sitting in a pleasant-enough room overlooking the front doorway to the pub above which I had just moved in. The pub was the Pig and Whistle on Soi 7 in Pattaya. Across the lane was a large hole, which they were hoping to build a hotel in and next door to that, right opposite me, was a tiny bar with one woman sitting on a stool outside it. Not that there was a wall there, it was open on two sides. The Soi was lovely and quiet, I thought. I also thought that I might go and sit in that little bar and talk to that lady, if my friend was late, because I would surely see him arrive from two metres away, the width of the Soi.

So, I went to the bar in the pub at 19:15 to await my friend who said he would come at 20:00. It was much busier than thirty minutes before but not noisy and I sat at the bar. The first thing a barmaid did was say hello, give me a menu and step back. I did not really want to eat, I only wanted a beer as I presumed we would be eating together later, but I wanted to read the menu anyway.

‘A pint of Boddington’s’, I said. It arrived and the girl began laying a setting for me. I tried to say that I was not hungry, but it was no good. Like in Spain, most people eat and drink at the same time. All the while the girl was smiling at me. Then she said: ‘You have room upstairs? My name Charli. What you want to eat?’. So, I gave in and ordered something and rice.

‘You first time in Thailand? You no can eat. Too spicy’, she said with a grin. ‘Oh’, I replied, ‘but I want to try. ‘I put only 50-50 for you’, she declared and was gone.

I battled my way through that meal and it took a Boddingtons and a bottle of water. Charli had been accurate, it was too hot for first-time foreigners and she had reduced the chilis by 50%. I have always heeded a Thai’s guidance on food ever since.

I changed seat to by the window to see what was happening as it was dark by 19:30 and I was curious. Within thirty minutes Soi 7 had changed completely. I could see hundreds of ladies and tourists milling about. I wanted to go out and join in or at least sit in the quiet bar across the way, but I’m ashamed to say that I was too scared, so I sat put, rivetted to the Pig like a rabbit in a hunter’s beam.

My friend walked in on time and after we had been talking for an hour, he said: ‘Drink up, I have someone I want you to meet’. This was it, we were going into that mele. A waitress opened the door for us and the racket and the heat were tremendous. Particularly the din. Every metre at least two or three girls would shout: ‘Hello, sexy man, you want a drink’. Trying to say no courteously to each invitation was out of the question, so I just stuck close to my pal.

Fortunately, we only had about fifty metres to walk and we sat down in another bar. My friend said hello to several ladies and then said, this a girl I have been going out with for some time. I was astounded as I had never heard him talk about her, ever. She was gorgeous, but could not speak English, so I sat in the din in silence. Not for long through, as my friend said, I have a blind date for you and he introduced another girl to me who was equally beautiful, but with whom I could speak a little. She was captivating and I was captivated. The din seemed to pass away, but it was only because I was listening to my new friend. The four of us had the best time and the best food I had ever had in my forty-nine years of existence.

Beijing Hotels and the Capital Museum: Treasures of an Ancient City

January 1st, 2010 Efrenn Larson No comments

Beijing, also known as Peking, is the seat of China’s politics. With a population of 17 million, it is the second largest city in China after Shanghai. The city is built with numerous railways, motorways, seaports and a modern airport to facilitate the movement of its citizens, visitors and the goods they produce. Travelling to the city has been made easier because of these developments.

As an old city hosting many significant tourist attractions, she always gives the traveler a sense of awe. The coexistence of the new and the old add to this great feeling. Not to mention, a number of Beijing hotels which are only a few minutes away from these landmarks help visitors save time by making them visit many spots in a day.

Chinese life sits side-by-side with their culture. This is the reason why a number of museums have been dedicated to the preservation of this unique characteristic. The Capital Museum, which opened in 1981 and renovated in 2007, is one of the biggest and more interesting. It now houses over 200,000 relics in its collection.

The museum’s frontage is based on human and cultural heritage and exemplifies the integration of the past and the present, art and modernism, history and nature. The gigantic roof and the slope at the entrance are derived from traditional Chinese architectural style, and the stone exterior reminds one of the walls of ancient China. Bronze, timber and stones are widely used throughout the museum to represent a deeper sense of historicity. Also, a glass curtain wall, which gives a grand and transparent effect, reflects a sense of modernity.

The museum holds three stable exhibitions. The first, named “Ancient Capital: Chapter on the History and Culture of Beijing,” depicts imperial rule and the intricacies of art, dance, architecture, trade, commerce and transportation of the early Chinese.

The second exhibition, dubbed “Ancient Capital: Urban Construction” emphasizes the movement from the old to the new world. It also highlights the adoption of new-age technologies which brought the nation to its present state. China’s urbanization is also included in this set.

The last exhibition, “Stories of the Capital City - Old Beijing Folk-customs” examines how folkways and folklores were vital in the life of the Chinese. Their belief in a Supreme Being and their customs to embrace luck are also found here.

Aside from these exhibitions, the museum also functions as a reception hall, cultural heritage storehouse, conference hall, and a digital movie hall where a super wide screen with the latest technology are installed to display high-definition films. For tourists, they can coordinate with their travel agency or any hotels in Beijing to purchase tickets so as not to miss this chance of a lifetime.

How To Choose Aviation Art

December 28th, 2009 Allen Wright No comments

The number and diversity of hobbies and interests that we have increase each year. Many of us enjoy collecting arts and crafts. Within this field, aviation art has become one of the most popular forms of pictures to collect. If you have always had an interest in flying then by collecting the magnificent images available of various old and new planes you will be able to explore in detail this fantastic form of travel.

But how do you begin a collection of aviation art? To start with you should concentrate on one particular era or style. For example you could begin by compiling pictures from the Second World War. This was an important time in the history of aviation as many new aircraft were developed to do battle in our skies.

Apart from an era, you could choose a selection of images of specific types of airplanes. Maybe you have also had a curiosity for propeller planes or those made by a particular manufacturer.

Before you start browsing the pictures that are available you will need to think about whether you are going to put them on display or keep them stored. A lot of collectors choose to hang their best pictures on their walls. If you have a housemate or family then you will also have to get their views as they may not have the same taste in decor. If you have a home office or study then this can be the perfect place to put your art on display.

You also need to think about where you will buy the aviation art from. Thankfully the internet has revolutionized the ease in which we can buy crafts and arts. You no longer need to spend time trying to locate a crafts store or gallery which will charge you high prices. Online art websites can offer a cheaper price. Also, there may not be any other option for you but to shop online as there is possibly no outlet selling aviation art in your area.

When buying any product online it is essential that you take steps to ensure that it is not a scam. Sadly many people do lose money through the internet. If you visit a website that offers a range of aviation related art then check to see if they have a contact number as well as physical address. If the only way of communicating is through email then you should be a little apprehensive as if a problem arises you may have no way of speaking to the seller.

Aviation art has been popular for more than seventy years. It first developed in the 1930s and 1940s as a way to depict the courageous deeds of the allied air force. At that time the only photography available was in black and white, so through drawing and creating pictures a more dramatic feeling could be imparted.

It was through aviation art that the public were motivated to the cause of defeating fascism in the Second World War. Public opinion was swayed by the images appearing in their newspapers.

Modern aviation art still uses a similar look to that what was created by the original artists. The colors and hues are reminiscent of a past style though of course the aircraft have changed dramatically.

Want to find out more about aviation art, then visit Allen Wright’s site on how to choose the best pictures for your needs.
